Driving in the dark

With it getting darker earlier in the evenings, we wanted to share some important tips on driving safely in the dark.

Lights

  • Use your headlights.
  • Keep your lights clean to make sure you get the most light out of them.
  • Automatic headlights will not always dip the lights for fog, make sure you do this manually.
  • Make the most of your full beams for safer driving, remember to take them off when other vehicles approach to avoid dazzling them.

Keep your distance and be vigilant

  • The closer you are to the vehicle in front of you restricts your view of the road ahead.
  • Driving too closely to the vehicle in front will cause your lights to dazzle them.
  • Watch out for animals on the road.
  • Be vigilant for cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians.

Take care when overtaking in the dark as it is more difficult to judge the road ahead, oncoming vehicles speed and position.

Driving in the dark is more tiring, make sure you keep hydrated and take breaks whenever you feel tired.

We recommend keeping a blanket and torch in the car for unexpected emergencies.

We hope you enjoyed these top tips, and have made you more aware of the adjustments you need to make to stay safe when driving in the dark.
