HOW IT WORKS

Skyactiv-X uses a unique Mazda technology called Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI).

SPCCI

SPCCI combines the fuel-efficiency of a diesel with the power and drivability of a petrol engine. The engine switches seamlessly between conventional spark ignition and a compression ignition mode where a lean fuel-air mix is compressed so that it will combust even more efficiently. It’s the best of both worlds.

​What is Skyactiv-X?

Skyactiv-X is our revolutionary new petrol engine, which produces high power, with low emissions. It’s more enjoyable to drive, with less fuel use.

How can it be more economical, but produce more power?

The answer is in the air. A normal petrol engine mixes air and petrol at the ratio of 14.7:1, but Skyactiv uses an incredibly lean mix of up to 40:1 when running in SPCCI mode. More air, less fuel equals better economy and more power.

​How does it work?

Skyactiv-X relies on a Mazda-patented technology called Spark Controlled Compression Ignition (SPCCI). An extremely lean mix of fuel and air are compressed to an extremely high pressure. A spark then ignites a very small, dense amount of fuel, which further raises the heat and pressure in the cylinder, causing the remaining fuel to ignite under pressure (like a diesel). The fuel burns more quickly and more completely so you get better performance and fewer emissions than a conventional engine..

​Do I need to change the way I drive?

No. Skyactiv-X has been designed to perform in the real world, not just a test laboratory. Most of the time it will run in SPCCI mode for maximum efficiency, but when you want to get the most of the power available the engine will seamlessly switch to a spark ignition mode, offering an exhilarating free-revving performance.

​Is Skyactiv-X turbo-charged?

No, but there is a small supercharger which helps to pressurise the air in the engine when running in SPCCI mode. No turbo means there’s no lag, just an intuitive surge of power all the way to the red line.
