Despite the current economy issues with rising fuel prices and cost of living the long awaited Mazda RX-7 revival is still going to happen. Rumours that we could see the new RX-7 as early as 2011 are getting us very excited and will almost certainly signal the end of the Mazda RX-8 era.

 

The new Mazda will feature the latest generation Renesis 16x rotary engine which debuted at the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show in the Taiki concept car. The Renesis 16x will utilise a 1.6 litre, two rotor Wankel engine with a x2 800cc configuration as opposed to the current RX-8 x2 654cc configuration. The increased displacement will make the new RX-7 capable of 350bhp and 215 pound-feet of torque versus the RX8’s 232bhp and 159lb-ft.

In addition the new design of the RX7 could see styling borrowed from the Mazda Furai concept car but only have a mid $30k price tag. The potential of this new car could see it become a huge competitor in the current market for compact Japanese sports cars.

The Nissan GTR, Hyundai Genesis Coupe and the Toyota FT-86 are all bound for new territories in the current sports car market and the Mazda RX-7 is destined to turn it all on its head.
